Advanced Technology

Every important new tool Dr. Acosta has incorporated into her practice has been to improve safety, comfort, and diagnostic capability for her patients. Let us tell you about what these new technologies mean for you.

Email and Text Confirmations

Communications: Email and Text Confirmation

One of the technological innovations we’ve pioneered is our e-mail and text confirmation system. Our office was one of the first offices in Silicon Valley to utilize this service. I’ve had so many patients tell me just how effective it is and how much they appreciate it.

With this system, you’ll receive an e-mail message 30 days before your appointment reminding you of the date and time of your next visit. Then, four days prior to the appointment, you’ll receive a second confirming e-mail and if you prefer even a text message, just to make sure. If there are any questions about your appointment you can simply respond by e-mail and let us know. Or you only need to click on CONFIRM to let us know that you are coming. It’s another way we’ve found to keep the focus of the practice on your convenience.

Sopro Intraoral Camera

Sopro Intraoral Camera

Many patients, especially younger patients, are very familiar with the latest technology and are more comfortable with a high-tech practice. Computers, mp3 players and LED TV’s are the primary method of information processing.

Dr. Acosta utilizes intraoral camera technology that helps enhance your understanding of your diagnosis.  An intraoral camera is a very small camera; in some cases, just a few millimeters long.  An intraoral camera allows our practice to view clear, precise images of your mouth, teeth, and gums, in order for us to accurately make a diagnosis.  With clear, defined, enlarged images, you see details that may be missed by standard mirror examinations. This can mean faster diagnosis with less chair-time for you!

Intraoral cameras also enable our practice to save your images in your electronic dental record to provide a permanent record. These pictures can be printed or emailed to you, to other dental specialists, and to the dental lab or insurance company.

Dexis FMX on monitor

DEXIS Digital X-Rays

Dr. Acosta chooses carefully which and when radiographs are taken. There are many guidelines that we follow. Radiographs allow us to see everything we cannot see with our own eyes. Radiographs enable us to detect cavities in between your teeth, determine bone level, and health of bone. We can also examine the roots and nerves of teeth, diagnose lesions such as cysts or tumors, as well as assess damage when trauma occurs.

First, as you may know, digital radiography is a new X-Ray technology that eliminates film. When you have X-Rays taken in our office with the award winning DEXIS system, you won’t have to wait for X-Ray film to be developed. You’ll immediately see a digital X-Ray image on a large-screen computer, very near the chair you’re sitting in. There’s no waiting for film to be developed, so you don’t waste your time.

But even more important, digital radiography exposes you to up to 90 percent less radiation than traditional film X-Rays do. It’s much safer than the old technology. And with this important new tool, you’ll be involved in treatment planning much more than before. The large images, combined with tools that enable me to highlight potential problem areas on the screen so you can see them, enable you to understand just what I’m talking about. In my practice, you’re directly involved in treatment planning, so you know just what to expect.

SoproLIFE Caries Detector

SoproLIFE Caries Detector

Cavities are not always readily apparent and can be difficult to diagnose, especially if they are on the back of the teeth and other difficult to see areas. SoproLIFE is a safe and harmless laser that uses a specific wavelength of blue light to scan for cavities. When a cavity is found, the light that bounces back to the sensor is of a different wavelength and this is displayed on our computer screen. Affected areas are easily noted by changes in colors on the video display.

With SoproLIFE it is possible to detect cavities very early and begin treatment in the initial stages. This makes the treatment more conservative and rapid and also prevents any further damage from occurring. The chances of being able to retain the natural tooth are also increased.

NSK Electric Handpiece

Electric handpieces provide many advantages for the dentist. There are also many advantages to the patient.

  • Less noise and whine, which is reduced by about 65 percent.
  • No vibration, due to a gear-driven head design.
  • Less time in the dental chair.
Infection Control

Infection Control

Infection controls and universal precautions protect clients and staff alike. Everyone benefits from rigorous infection control – you, your dentist, and the dental team. The cornerstone in a good and safe dental practice is the element of trust. You should feel free to discuss this topic with Dr. Acosta and receive a straightforward answer.

Dr. Acosta and our entire team follow procedures recommended by several federal agencies: the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). These measures include:

  • Disinfectant hand soap
  • Gloves and face masks
  • Chemical disinfection of countertops and surfaces
  • Sterilization of all equipment before every use
  • Disposable materials
  • Weekly spore monitoring of all sterilization equipment

We sterilize all reusable equipment, including dental hand pieces. We use an autoclave, a device that kills bacteria and viruses by steam, heat and pressure.

The best defense against disease is information. The more you know, the better equipped you are to make wise decisions about your health care. The more you know about our daily procedures and policies, the more comfortable you will feel.
